Do you have a missing tooth that needs replacing? One of the most popular and effective treatment options is a dental implant. By surgically embedding a titanium post into your jawbone, your restoration will feel as though you had your natural tooth again! But maybe you’ve heard certain rumors about the procedure and are hesitant to pursue it. Read on about the most common dental implant myths and why you shouldn’t pay them any mind.

Myth #1: Dental Implants Are Noticeable

After completing your treatment process, the only ones who’ll know you have a new tooth are you and your dentist. The dental implant will be surgically embedded into your jawbone and typically capped with a porcelain crown. This means you’ll be able to enjoy a tooth-colored restoration that matches the rest of your smile!

Myth #2: Dental Implants Are For Older People

By age 20, your jawbone should be fully matured. As long as you’re gums and bones are healthy, you should be a good candidate for a dental implant. The best way to determine this is through an initial consultation with your dentist so they can check your mouth and walk you through your treatment options.

Myth #3: Dental Implants Cause Discomfort

Your dentist will certainly use local anesthesia during your procedure to block out any pain or sensitivity. The most you should feel is some pressure in your gums as they place your dental implant. Afterward, you may be prescribed pain relievers to help manage any discomfort for the next several days. Once your procedure is completed, you’ll feel like you have your permanent tooth again.

Myth #4: Dental Implants Cost Too Much

The overall cost of your dental implant may not be as expensive as you think due to its long-term benefits. With proper care, you’ll be able to enjoy your restoration for around 15 years while the titanium post can last you a lifetime. This makes them a cost-effective investment by preventing the need for additional restorative treatments.

Myth #5: Dental Implants Have Food Restrictions

The only time you should avoid certain snacks, like hard or sticky foods, is during your recovery period. Once the surgical site has healed and your dentist says you’re good to go, you’ll be able to enjoy most of the food on the menu—especially the healthy kind!

If you’re interested in getting a dental implant, be sure to consult your dentist about it first. They’ll be more than happy to bust a few myths while discussing your treatment options.
